Being the second day into our last month of a very cold, wet and windy
season Melbourne has presented us with thus far, a post about ‘winter vegies’
springs to mind.
When mentioning ‘winter vegies’ I’m not implying vegetables to
be sown in the winter months, yet those vegetables that we all may have sown
back in the late Summer, early Autumn. These will be the vegetables that will
be readily available to us over the next three months, or those we would have
had readily available to us if we had have planted them earlier this year. The
winter harvest includes a wide range of varieties, just about everyone can find
at least one of the chosen vegetables to enjoy over the colder months.
The
winter harvest we should all be looking out for over our colder season
includes: Asian greens, avocado, beetroot, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage,
carrot, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, fennel, horseradish, Jerusalem
artichoke, Kale, leek, okra, olives, onion, parsnip, peas, potato, pumpkin,
silverbeet, spinach, Swede, sweet potato, turnip. If your feeling that you may
have missed out this year and will not have such a wide variety of winter
vegetables to harvest from then next year ensure you get planning and planting
earlier so you don’t miss out two years in a row!
